Drug abuse is rampant and the drug of choice is changing. The onslaught of abuse of prescription drugs is being done by teens and young adults by the thousands, if not millions.

So, can this new drug of choice be stopped? Besides taking prescription pills out of medicine cabinets of parents and grandparents, how do you stop the sales from the street venders? Is it the supplier whom we need to stop â or the buyer?

Well, thereâs the law of supply and demand. Reduce the demand and the suppliers go elsewhere in search of buyers. But how do we reduce the buyers when the use of these prescription drugs is done in secret?

Does education help? Not completely. There are no gross pictures to demonstrate the effects of abusing prescription drugs â unless you show them a dead body. Because many think they are infallible to having the drugs do anything real bad to them, they donât heed the warning of donât take alcohol with prescription drugs, especially pain pills.

Does peer pressure help to stop it? Actually, thatâs whatâs getting most of the teens and young adults to participate in the âdrug partiesâ where prescriptions are thrown into a bowl and people choose them like they would candy. There is more peer pressure to participate in taking prescription pills, than trying to talk a person out of it.

Dose a parentâs discussion with their teens help avoid this problem? Not likely. Why? Because the discussion is focused on educating them about the bad effects of abusing the drugs.

So, whatâs missing? Giving the teens and young adults an alternative.

Iâm talking about providing a positive, uplifting, long-term solution. Itâs getting them involved in learning how to plan for their future and take responsibility for their lives and stand up for whatâs right.

Think of it this way. If the person has an awesome future to look forward to, has short-term goals they can work on almost every day, and theyâre totally excited about their life and where theyâre going in life and see all the possible things that can happen for them, then they wonât want to mess that up by abusing drugs.

Yes, I know that most teens (and even adults) donât know what they want to do with their future. But what about their life at this moment? What are they passionate about? What is it that gets them totally turned on and excited when they do it?Â It could be a sport, some activity at school, some special project theyâve been wanting to do, or some cause that they believe in and would like to get involved in.

You see, a person needs not only a reason not to abuse drugs because of the bad side effects … but they also need a reason not to abuse drugs because they donât want to mess up this fantastic future they have, or this awesome project theyâre excited to be involved in.

If youâre a parent, help your kid discover what their passion in life is. In fact, you can probably walk this same path as you work together to uncover each of your passion in life.

If youâre the one abusing drugs, take a few minutes to write down what excited you in life. If you had all the money and time and necessary skills, what would you do with your life? What is the BIG dream for you?

Can drug abuse be stopped? Yes. It all starts with one person. Perhaps you.

The nasty habit of drug addiction has spread like a plague all over the world; millions of people get addicted to some kind of drugs every year and thousands of them die premature death. Deadly drugs like cocaine, heroin and marijuana have devastated the human life. Government of many countries has taken several initiatives to prevent people from taking drugs, but they have failed. Whenever, the government banned any particular drug, the addicted people shifted to another one. In each and every initiative they took, failure was certain. Preventing people from taking drugs has become almost impossible; but if tried properly, drug addiction of a person can be cured if proper treatment is provided in a drug rehab center. Besides men, a huge population of women also gets addicted to drugs every year and they share the same fate. When they do not get proper treatment, they die due to the effects of the drugs. Addiction to drugs and death due to drug addiction has increased a lot in the past few years; but a relief in such situations is the drug rehab centers. Hundreds of drug addiction treatment centers have grown up all over United States and many of them provide excellent treatment facilities. Right after the drug detox program, the withdrawal effects of drug addiction show up and most of the withdrawal effects cause immense mental and physical pain. Most drug addiction treatment centers cannot control the patients when the grueling withdrawal effects show up. It has also been seen that the drug addicted patients have run away from some rehab centers and got back to their nasty addiction life. This should be prevented at all cost and the only way to prevent this is to get admitted in any world class drug rehab center. The medical staffs of these rehab centers provide immense care and comfort, which keeps the patients calm and provide the mental strength to fight against the pain of the withdrawal effects.

Drug treatment courts are an excellent example of a successful deviation from established practice. They were created by sitting criminal court judges, overwhelmed and appalled by the real world they saw before them each day. Not only do drug treatment courts introduce new concepts and practices to the legal community, but they do so while protecting the defendant’s procedural and substantive rights.

Judge Peggy Hora retired from the California Superior Court after serving 21 years. She had a criminal assignment that included presiding over the Drug Treatment Court. She is a former dean of the B.E. Witkin Judicial College of California and has been on the faculty of the National Judicial College over 15 years. She is a recipient of the Bernard S. Jefferson Judicial Education Award from the California Judges’ Association and winner of the Rose Bird Award from California Women Lawyers. Judge Hora is a Senior Judicial Fellow for the National Drug Court Institute. She has lectured nationally and internationally and has written extensively on justice issues. The appellate court and over 100 journals and law reviews have cited her work. She is a 2009 Thinker in Residence appointed by the Premier of South Australia, where she is currently working on therapeutic jurisprudence and restorative justice issues for the government in Adelaide. Her most recent article, “Courting New Solutions Using Problem-Solving Justice: Key Components, Guiding Principles, Strategies, Responses, Models, Approaches, Blueprints and Tool Kits” will be published by the Chapman Law Review this spring.

Ayurvedic relief from addictions like drugs, alcohol, smoking and over eating helps people come back to enjoying their life without addictions to any harmful substances. Ayurveda is unique system of lifestyle that helps people lead healthy lives. Ayurvedic addiction recovery therapies work with the willpower of the person.

As a first step to recover from the addiction, the person must identify he is slave to an addiction and should have a desire to recover from alcohol addiction, drug addiction or addiction to smoking. Over eating is also a behavioral problem that has far reaching consequences on one’s health.

One detrimental factor to free one from addictions is the withdrawal symptoms. The addicts feel they are punished for abandoning the use of drugs, alcohol or cigarette.

Ayurveda approaches this problem systematically and Ayurvedic system of cure from addictions is based on treating the cause instead of symptoms. The alcohol consumption or smoking is only a symptom. Underlying reasons can be stress or mental tension. The person tries to dissolve his worries in alcohol, but he or she ends up more worried and disheartened.

Ayurveda aims at removing the root cause of the addiction. Ayurveda aims at replacing the addictive behavior with some constructive behavior. For instance, smokers will be given herbal cigarettes, which satisfy their urge to smoke, but removes the toxins added to their body.

This herbal approach is supplemented with counseling, guided meditation, massage therapy, aromatherapy, etc which help in complete recovery of the addiction without withdrawal symptoms.

The inertia or the mental conditioning of the person to give up the habit is the first thing that needs attention.

Ayurveda also recommends personalized treatment programs based on the physical constitution of the person. Physical constitution, called DOSHA in Ayurvedic terms gives clues to effectiveness in recovery from any addictions.

Each type of persons have specific herbal formulations that help in removing toxic wastes accumulated to the body, strengthen internal tissues and easily recover the person from addiction.

The important factor is the mental preparedness of the person to accept he/she has some addictions and honest desire to recover. After getting the person in right mental condition, it is easy to recover from any life-threatening bad habits.
