Question by candigal: How can I find colleges in the NYC/CT area that offer a masters in counseling?
I’m looking to find a list(s) of colleges in the New York and connecticut that offer a masters program in mental heath or community counseling. I live in connecticut and I want to become an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor). I want to work with people who have mental health and/or substance abuse disorders. I already have my bachelors in psychology plus an associate degree in drug and alcohol counseling. Now I’m looking to get my masters. I’m already set to take the certification test to become a certified drug counselor this year, but the people who have masters get more job opportunities, higher positions, and better pay.

I have a friend who stopped drinking alcohol two days ago and she has been experiencing what seems to me like withdrawal symptoms. She’s always craving alcohol and gets clammy hands. I told her these are signs that she should get herself treated for addiction but she won’t listen to me. Am I right? If so, what can I do?

Your friend does have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. (other signs would be restlessness, insomnia, dreams of alcohol, hallucinations…) These are indeed signs that she should get herself treated for her alcohol addiction. The best thing you can do is to get her checked up by a doctor and he will then assess your friend’s condition. Your friend needs to be treated for her withdrawal. If she’s not swayed by your pleas, you can do an alcohol intervention for her.

How a Drug Treatment Center offers Hope
The obstacles of addiction are clear; pressure, violence, disease, sickness, incarceration and finally death. Drug addiction is emotionally draining and lurks around every corner, waiting to tempt a person to use and delve deeper. The disease of addiction works on the body’s ‘pleasure principle,” which means the human body has the tendency to seek out pleasure and do whatever necessary to avoid pain. Substances that disrupt normal behavior take over motivation, making a person seek out drugs in order to self-medicate. The normal control a person has over their own life disappears and behavior then focuses on doing whatever is necessary to be able to use drugs. A drug treatment center will teach an addict how to refocus their energies into healthier activities and turn away from drugs.
Recovery at a drug treatment center is a personal choice, but first requires the addict to acknowledge the problem and deciding to do something about it. The addict must accept he or she is not a victim, and in turn takes personal responsibility by entering a treatment program. Once the problem is out in the open, control can be taken back and the person decides not to be an addict anymore.
Abstaining from drug use is the first step in the journey to recovery; it may require the addict seeking out the services of a detoxification facility prior to entering drug treatment. Some treatment facilities offer detoxification as a part of their normal services; it would be beneficial to inquire as to what services are offered at the drug treatment center you are considering.
Once a person has admitted to an addiction and begins counseling and therapy, they are able to truly see there is more beauty in life than just doing drugs. Support groups are an additional service offered by traditional rehab treatment programs; they help the recovery patient by providing non-judgmental support and help the patient gain strength to meet the daily struggles of resisting the temptation to use drugs.
Drug addiction is not something that can be effectively handled alone; addicts need all the assistance they can get in the fight. Overcoming the addiction and finding a healthier way of life are very important parts of the recovery process and best handled with the backing of a qualified treatment program.
